Thomasina Bateman, an antiquarian is writing a book on the history of barrows in England. It’s a record of the treasures that she discovers inside. A captivating letter encourages her to go to the small village of Bewlay in the remote countryside of England. She travels there by train along with her assistant one day later.
The mysterious figure who called her to rescue her is not there upon her arrival. Her assistant never arrives. An uncompromising landowner denies access to the barrow and the locals are wary of this woman who is travelling on her own as well (gasp!) wears trousers.
